Pettson, un vieil homme, vit paisiblement dans sa maison rouge et passe son temps à couper du bois, à travailler à ses inventions et à s'occuper de ses poulets. Il se sent parfois un peu seul, jusqu'au jour où sa voisine Beda lui offre un chat, qu'il surnomme aussitôt Picpus. Celui-ci est doué de la parole. Entre Pettson et le félin très facétieux, c'est le début d'une grande amitié.
