Spike Lee
Biographie
Spike Lee est né Shelton Lee en 1957, à Atlanta, en Géorgie. Très jeune, il a déménagé de la Géorgie pré-civile à Brooklyn, New York. Lee venait d'un milieu fier et intelligent. Son père était musicien de jazz et sa mère, institutrice. Sa mère l'a surnommé Spike, en raison de sa nature dure. Il a fréquenté l'école Morehouse College d'Atlanta et a développé ses compétences en réalisation de films à l'Université Clark d'Atlanta. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme, il s'est inscrit au programme de cinéma d'études supérieures de la Tisch School of Arts. Il a réalisé un court métrage controversé, The Answer (1980), une refonte de D.W. La naissance d'une nation de Griffith (1915) - un film de dix minutes. Lee a ensuite produit un film de 45 minutes Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1983), qui a remporté un prix de l'Académie des étudiants. Le prochain film de Lee, "The Messenger", en 1984, était quelque peu biographique. En 1986, Spike Lee réalise le film She's Gotta Have It (1986), une comédie sur les relations sexuelles. Lee a ensuite réalisé son film phare, Do the Right Thing (1989), un film spécifiquement sur sa propre ville à Brooklyn, New York. Le film dépeint un quartier par une journée très chaude et les tensions raciales qui émergent. Le film a remporté une nomination aux Oscars, pour Danny Aiello, pour l'acteur de soutien. Cela a également déclenché un débat sur les relations raciales. Lee a ensuite produit le biopic de jazz Mo' Better Blues (1990) qui montrait son talent de réalisateur et d'acteur, et a été le premier de nombreux films de Spike Lee à présenter Denzel Washington. Son film suivant, Jungle Fever (1991), portait sur les rencontres interraciales. Le traitement du sujet par Lee s'est avéré une fois de plus très controversé. Le prochain film de Lee était la biographie éponyme de Malcolm X (1992), dans laquelle Denzel Washington dépeint le leader des droits civiques. Le film a été un succès et a abouti à une nomination aux Oscars pour Washington. Ses films suivants étaient le relativement léger, Crooklyn (1994), et le drame policier intense, Clockers (1995).
